Solutions for Armenia's water crisis

Experts from the PA Armenia Water Program are working to resolve a critical water management problem that affects more than half of Armenia's population.
Nearly 1.75 million people live in cheaply constructed apartment buildings (seen above), in a poor state of repair with internal network water losses of 40 to 60%. Past attempts to address the problems were undermined by gaps in legislation, ambiguities of ownership, and the absence of an objective body capable of bringing disparate stakeholders together to develop solutions.
The PA Water Program is becoming that objective entity and, together with local bodies, is crafting a strategy for results. The Government of Armenia has approved our recommendations and formed two high-level policy committees to bring PA's work and vision to fruition. USAID is also enthusiastic about this project – its successful roll-out will be a model for other CIS countries faced with a similar impending crisis.
