07 February 2002
PA Consulting Group, the leading international management, systems and technology consulting firm, has been named overall winner of the fifth annual Management Consultancies Association (MCA) Best Management Practice Awards for its innovative work with the Swiss Government Federal Office of Transport, for developing a wireless communications strategy for the Swiss railway industry. PA was also Highly Commended in the Outsourcing category for its work at the travel technology company, Sabre. In addition, PA's three other entries to this year's awards - a road safety project for the DTLR (the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions), the Scottish Care Information programme for the NHS Scotland, and the UK online project for the Office of the e-Envoy - were all named as among the runners up.
Jon Moynihan, PA's Chairman and Chief Executive, commented:
"For an unprecedented fifth year running, PA has won at the MCA Awards and we are delighted to be named Overall Winner. The award is testimony to our unrelenting focus on our clients and recognition of our success in taking on some of the toughest and most high-profile challenges in our industry."
PA worked with the Swiss Government Federal Office of Transport (Bundesamt für Verkehr - BAV) to unify communications across the Swiss railway sector, which comprises about 50 operating companies. On the strength of PA's work, railway companies in Switzerland are now going ahead with the introduction of a wireless communications system known as GSM-R (GSM for railways) which can meet the needs of the rail industry.
Mr Hüppi, of the Federal Office of Transport, commented:
"PA's work offered us more than just a theoretical recommendation but a practical blueprint for implementing the solution, complete with costs and timescales. The assignment will benefit Swiss railway passengers for many years to come and will help Swiss Railways to maintain its impeccable safety record while introducing faster services."
Phil White, who led the project and is a senior member of PA's wireless technology team, commented:
"The client chose PA because they wanted someone to challenge all their ideas and thrash out a watertight answer. This wasn't a case where we just had to respond to a set of pre-defined objectives - the client wanted a practical way forward, evaluated from every angle so as to minimise risk. Our breadth of capability enabled us to create the detailed roll-out plan, the overall strategy for the communication provider and work on the final technical specification for implementation."
PA was also Highly Commended in the Outsourcing category for its assignment with Sabre. The assignment involved working closely with Sabre during the sale of its outsourcing business, the outsourcing of Sabre's own IT infrastructure, and the creation of a long-term partnership with the buyer.
William J Hannigan, Chairman, President and CEO of Sabre, commented:
"PA was an essential ingredient to achieving Sabre's very aggressive goal of completing an outsourcing sale and marketing agreement within record time."
Jon Moynihan, PA's Chairman and Chief Executive, concluded:
"PA delivers award-winning results because we are a conflict-free firm that combines skills across a unique breadth of capability, spanning management, systems and technology consultancy. We salute the PA consultants and clients who again proved, against the tough competition of over 60 entries from other consulting firms, that PA can be relied upon to deliver impartially driven, leading-edge results, worldwide."
