It's official: PA Consulting Group finds e-business in the pharmaceutical industry is simply business as usual

Second annual pharmaceutical industry survey reveals e-business 'not dead but dormant'
A new survey reveals that e-business remains a high priority, but many companies have adopted a ‘wait and see' position after the dot-com implosion. These findings, announced today by PA Consulting Group, a leading global management, systems and technology consulting firm, are the results of PA's 2001 e-business survey.
The survey, which includes responses from senior executives at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the United States and Europe, indicates that most companies take a conservative approach to e-business:
- Most have at least a small investment in e-business (such as an external Web site)
- E-business investments are tiny compared to investments in R&D or marketing (between $1 million and $10 million)
- Few companies have a concrete e-business strategy that supports their overall business goals (less than 20 percent)
- Company initiatives are widely varied and autonomous throughout business functions (corporate-level support is low)
- Few companies have clear performance measures or define ROI for e-business (less than 50 percent).
"Our survey shows that e-business in the pharmaceutical industry isn't dead, but it remains dormant," says Keith Clinkscales, a member of PA's management team. "This underlines what we know from working with key industry players: there is enormous opportunity to gain a competitive edge through smarter, more aggressive e-business investments."
