11 October 2001
PA Consulting Group, the leading management, systems and technology consulting firm, will run a one-day workshop on Tuesday 16 October as part of IBC's UMTS Congress 2001 in Barcelona. The workshop, preceding the main conference (17 to 19 October), is entitled '3G Network design and planning - an integrated approach' and will give guidance on how to design and deploy a complete UMTS network so as to minimise costs and bring forward revenue generation.
The Congress is a major annual event on UMTS technology, applications and business issues. Last year it attracted 3,500 delegates from 57 different countries.
PA's workshop theme is the design and development of UMTS networks. After an introductory session on overall design concepts, it will address radio network planning, services implementation and services development. The final session - dealing with 'hot topics' in UMTS networks such as infrastructure sharing, terminal availability, re-use of 2G cell sites and roll-out strategies - will lead into open discussion of these issues with PA's team of experts.
Alan Carr, a member of PA's Management Group, and lead presenter, comments:
"The workshop will focus on the need for a holistic approach to network design, important for UMTS because it involves far more interactions between different parts of the system than was the case with GSM. The design of radio, transmission, core network and applications must be approached in an integrated way for effective results. The need is for a services-led approach to network design, which incorporates business and technical aspects."
Alan continues:
"These fundamental principles are essential to build effective UMTS networks and offer attractive services to subscribers. PA tackles issues from business planning and licensing through to radio planning, transmission networks and application development and we have devised a range of in-house tools and techniques to address issues such as infrastructure sharing, capacity planning and mapping services onto network elements."
Workshop registrations are welcomed on the day, from 8am for a 9am start.
