PA Consulting Group sweeps top management awards ...again
-
31 January 2000
PA Consulting Group, the leading international management, systems and technology consultancy, has been named overall winner of the fourth annual Management Consultancies Association (MCA) Best Management Practice Awards for its innovative work with OFFER (now known as Ofgem), the electricity regulator, in helping prepare the industry for the introduction of domestic competition. PA was also winner of the Best Use of IT category for the third year running, for its work in helping MAFF create and implement its Cattle Passports scheme.
PA worked with OFFER and the electricity industry to co-ordinate the liberalisation of the UK electricity supply market. The assignment, reputed to be the largest ever IT-based change programme in Europe and a world first, delivered benefits of supplier choice and lower costs to domestic electricity users across the UK. Yvonne Constance OBE JP, then Chairman of the Electricity Consumers’ Committees Chairmen’s Group, commented at the time, "I have been impressed with PA’s courage to take the risk and commitment that delivered such a satisfying result for UK project management as well as for utility services. All electricity consumers will have much to thank PA for."
Mike Rappolt, who led the Offer project and leads PA's Energy practice, commented:
"Establishing a competitive market for electricity supply without the necessity of changing meters marks a world first for Great Britain. Many believed it could not be done, but the project is now hailed as a success by Government, regulator, industry and consumers alike and recognised as industry best practice worldwide."
PA also won the Best Use of IT category - for an unprecedented third year running - for its assignment with the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF). The Cattle Tracing System, developed by PA and MAFF, was a key factor in getting the EC export ban lifted on British beef in August 1999, a major milestone for the UK Government, British trade and the public at large.
Michael O'Higgins, head of PA's Government and Public Services consulting practice, added:
"The high public and political profile of this assignment - reflecting the intense pressure to bring about a rapid end to the beef export ban - posed a tremendous challenge for us and our MAFF client and colleagues. The need to win over the hearts and minds of Britain's cattle farmers while the system was introduced was also crucial."
In addition, PA's work for BASF Pharma, on its Accelerating Clinical Development programme, was commended by the judges in the Best Strategy and Business Transformation category.
Jon Moynihan, PA's Executive Chairman, concluded:
"When we won two out of the three awards in last year's MCA competition we knew it would be a hard act to follow but this year PA has done even better. Congratulations to all the winning teams - both the PA consultants and our clients who worked alongside them to make this success happen - for the great work that led to these awards. Once again, the quality of our work is our best advertisement and a far more effective way of building our reputation than spending millions on generic, content free advertising."
